With October being National Fire Prevention Month, it's a prime time to brush up on fire safety practices. We have come up with a list of practices that will ensure you and your family will be prepared in the event of a house fire. See below! 

Tips: 

• Install smoke alarms on every floor level of the home, inside bedrooms and any outdoor sleeping areas.
• Test smoke alarms regularly(once a month) and make sure to replace batteries at least once a year. 
• Teach children in the household what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when they hear one. 
• Make sure to have fire extinguishers readily available throughout the residence. 
• Ensure that all household members know at least two escape routes from every room in the house. 
• Have a family fire escape plan and go over the plan twice a year. 
• Make sure everyone knows how to use a phone to dial 9-1-1. 
• Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL should their clothing catch on fire. 
• Use flashlights during power outages, not candles. 
• Never leave a burning candle unattended. 
• Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach. 
• Keep your clothing dryer well maintained as lint could easily start a fire. 
• Space heaters count for a third of heating fires so it is very important to make sure all flammable items are kept at least three feet away from the heater. 
• Make sure windows are not stuck, screens can be removed and that security bars can be properly opened.
