Leigh Insurance Agency of St Augustine Blog |
Are you new to Florida or the St. Augustine area? If so, you’re not alone – Florida continues to be one of the fastest growing states in the country, and St. Johns alone is in the top 10 fastest growing counties in the United States. When you move to the Sunshine State, you are considered a resident when you become employed, place children in public school or establish residency otherwise, and after you are allotted 10 days to register your vehicles. At Leigh Insurance Agency, we want to help you get situated in your new home – and help you out when it comes to making sure your ducks are in a row while getting your vehicles ready for the road.
So what steps must you take to get your car registered? 1. Obtain a FL Driver’s License When heading to the DMV, be sure to bring your license from your previous state, proof of your social security number, and two official documents showing your residential address. If you have a clean driving record, you won’t need to take a road test to obtain a license, however you will be asked to complete a vision test before your new license will be issued. 2. Obtain auto insurance in Florida – from a licensed Florida agent. You’ll need proof of insurance on the vehicle you are registering with the required limits. In Florida, this is personal injury protection coverage and property damage. However, it’s important to talk over what coverage is important to you with a licensed agent in order to understand how your insurance protects you. 3. Head to the DMV – but make sure to bring required documents for your vehicle. You’ll need your VIN and an official odometer filing completed. If you bring your vehicle with you, a DMV employee can help you with this. You will also need your FL driver’s license, proof of insurance (this is either a declaration’s page or ID cards which will be provided by your insurance agent) and your out-of-state title. If you are financing your vehicle and do not have the title, you may need a bill of sale or proof that you are making payments with the lienholder’s information. 4. Pay necessary fees & receive your Florida registration and plates. Fees range depending on the vehicle, plate and registration, but expect to pay at least a $225 initial fee for those moving from out-of-state. Questions?
