Hurricane Season is approaching - what's your plan?

​Hurricane Season officially begins in less than a month on June 1st, and while many Floridians take the unknown with stride, it’s also important to be prepared for the unpredictable weather. At Leigh Insurance, we know this can be stressful, and we want to make sure you have the resources you need to ensure your safety.

Review your emergency plans –
Do you know your evacuation route? If you live in St. Johns County, you can locate this here. If you aren’t going to evacuate, where is the safest location in your home? Even if you think it may not happen, reviewing your emergency plan with others in your household is a good idea just in case.

Be sure you have necessary supplies –
Whether it’s extra food and bottles of water, portable charging devices, blankets, pet care items, or first aid, be sure you have the items you need BEFORE you need them.  Even if you plan to evacuate in the event of an emergency, long traffic jams or other circumstances may prevent you from accessing new supplies, so it’s a smart idea to have them ready to go.

Keep documents safe –
If an emergency DOES happen, the last thing you want is to be scrambling for your ID or other documents after the dust settles. Make sure you have copies of important items and a safe place for the originals, whether it’s on your person or in a secured container.

Know what your insurance covers –

You may be covered for named storms, but did you know most homeowners policies don’t include flood caused by a named storm? It may also be helpful to know your elevation level. It’s also a good idea to go over your deductibles with your agent to ensure you’re able to pay the necessary amount out of pocket in the event of a loss. And if you don’t currently have insurance, be sure you secure the protection you need before storm activity begins.
