Irish culture in St. Augustine

​Did you know the Irish have a long history on the Old Coast?

With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, Leigh Insurance Agency of St. Augustine is recognizing Irish heritage.
Many are unaware that when Pedro Menendez de Aviles came to shore in 1565, founding St. Augustine as we know it, he brought with him Irish soldiers and missionaries on board. And in 1606, the parish priest, Father Richard Arthur, started the first public school in America in St. Augustine.

To this day, you can find Irish heritage in St. Augustine. For an authentic experience, you can visit Meehan’s Irish Pub, Ann O’Malley’s Deli & Pub, or Barley Republic. St. Augustine is also home to a large St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which took place on March 12th, accompanying the Celtic Festival!
