New to St. Aug? Explore the oldest city

Explore the history –

St. Augustine is the oldest continuously-occupied settlement in the United States and was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers, so of course, you can find history at every turn. On the shore of the Matanzas Bay, the Castillo de San Marcos welcomes you to the city – and it is surely a must-see. It’s the oldest masonry fort in the continental US, and you can tour the inside of the fort while hearing stories of those who once walked its coquina walls from park rangers. The fort’s “little sister,” Fort Matanzas, is located south of the Castillo. You can also explore the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum located on Anastasia Island. The lighthouse is also said to be one of the most haunted places in the city, with years of rich history dating back to the 1800s.

Shop local –

Small businesses are the heart of St. Augustine, and there’s no shortage of them. Whether you’re looking for the perfect one-of-a-kind gift or souvenir, or for a delicious bite to eat, take a stroll downtown. You can start on St. George Street, which is a pedestrian-only street lined with local shops, artists and food, and then make your way to Aviles Street – the oldest in the country. There you’ll find art galleries as well as museums and restaurants. Continue exploring the historic district for a full day – the discoveries are endless!

Walk – or ride – the streets for a ghost tour

St. Augustine is known for its supposed hauntings, and a ghost tour is a great way to see the city. From walking tours with historians, to theatrical trolley rides and food tours, the city offers something for everyone. Enjoy the wildlife & nature –

The beaches in and around St. Augustine are beautiful year-round, and you can also find walking and biking trails at Anastasia State Park. If you’re looking for a thrill, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm offers face-to-face encounters with various wildlife. Take a drive to Washington Oaks Gardens State Park near Palm Coast to see an array of native and non-native plants and wildlife.
